Postcards From Abroad: Victoria Cabellos

Postcards From Abroad travels to South America to meet up with Muhlenberg cross country/track & field runner and senior Victoria Cabellos, a political science major studying in Buenos Aires, Argentina, this semester.

What classes are you taking? Which class is your favorite?
I am taking a Spanish class, a political economy of Argentine society class, a political history of the Americas class and an introductory level tango class. I don't really have a favorite because I love them all, but my political history class has been the most difficult and interesting, which makes me feel excited to go to class every week.

Have you been able to travel at all yet?
Yes! I visited some of my family in Uruguay, visited Iguazú Falls (in the North of Argentina), visited an estancia in the countryside and spent a weekend in Mendoza.

How have you been training while abroad?
I originally attempted to join a local running group, but being in the middle of the city meant there aren't that many near me, so I've been training on my own. My host mom showed me how to get to some nearby parks, and when I don't have time to run, I hop on a city bike to get a quicker workout in.

What has been the overall hardest adjustment?
Probably adjusting to my new schedule here. I take multiple night classes, no longer have scheduled practices, and socially, people here are not as rigid about start/end times for anything. I have so much less structure than I'm used to, and things tend to start/end later in the day than in the U.S., so keeping a consistent routine is a challenge.

What made you decide to study abroad?
My mom is from Uruguay, so I grew up traveling abroad to visit family, and I've always wanted to experience living outside the U.S. by myself for a longer period of time.

What have you learned about yourself while studying abroad?
I've mostly learned that I am very American. Also that some things simply cannot be translated, especially if the concept itself doesn't exist for the other culture.

Any messages for your teammates back home?
Keep up the good work, I miss and love you all! #mulesflytogether
