Declan Walkush Abroad London

Men's Cross Country

Postcards From Abroad: Declan Walkush

Postcards From Abroad takes a leap to across the pond to visit Muhlenberg cross country/track & field runner and junior Declan Walkusha double major in theatre (design concentration) and media & communication who is studying in London, England, this semester.

What classes are you taking? Which class is your favorite?

I'm taking "Media, Modernity, and Social Thought," "Elements of Theatre History: Russian Theatre," "Culture, Society, and the Individual," and "London Theatre." I'd have to say my favorite so far is "Media, Modernity, and Social Thought" because it contextualizes modern era European philosophical works in a 21st-century media landscape. It is also interesting to hear the outsider perspective on American media and culture from my classmates who come from a wide variety of non-American backgrounds.

Have you been able to travel at all yet?

I was just on a trip to Dublin where I met up with Muhlenberg women's cross country captain Stephanie Ng. We toured all around the city and engaged in the classic Irish culture as much as we could! Additionally, as a part of the class "London Theatre," the students are taken to one production per week in a wide variety of theatres all over London and its surrounding areas. That has been a great way to get to know the city and experience a wide variety of London neighborhoods.

How have you been training while abroad?

While abroad I've been running in the range of 35-40 miles per week (55-65 kilometers for my European friends) mostly in the parks around the southeast end of London. I've also joined the London City Athletics Club and attend at least one track workout per week with them and King's College, another university in the area.

What has been the overall hardest adjustment?

The overall hardest adjustment has certainly been missing my friends, family and teammates from school and home. Of course, adjusting to life without the Wood Dining Commons is a close second.

What made you decide to study abroad?

I wanted to study abroad to have the experience of learning in another country's education system, and generally broaden my view on life.

What have you learned about yourself while studying abroad?

I've learned that it is in fact possible for me to survive solely on frozen pizzas for weeks. I've also learned to trust myself more as I push further outside my comfort zone and discover new things I'm fond of every day.

Any messages for your teammates back home?

My message is a simple one; Mules Fly Together. I urge them not to forget this crucial factoid, and have a great season!
