The latest Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week is none other than Muhlenberg's own
Trevor Mikuta, who led the undefeated Mules to a pair of shutouts against regionally ranked opponents last week.
The senior back first made his presence felt on the offensive end in men's soccer's 2-0 shutout of Rutgers-Camden on October 7, tallying an assist on
Daniel Ariza's go-ahead goal in the 65th minute. Mikuta headed a shot on goal that the netminder couldn't corral, and Ariza flicked the rebound in for a 1-0 advantage.
Mikuta continued his strong play into the Mules' matchup at McDaniel, despite the difficulty ratcheting up even further after Muhlenberg was shown a red card late in the first half. His most spectacular play came when he helped out goalkeeper
Ben Mulford by saving a shot off the line early in the second half. That kept the score at 0-0, where it remained for the rest of the match.
Muhlenberg's recorded four straight shutouts and hasn't allowed a goal in its last 382 minutes of play. That's thanks to Mikuta and the Mules' defense's continued excellence and is despite missing two-time first-team All-Centennial Conference center back and team captain
Sam Roberts for the past week. The Mules are 7-0-6 and on the second-longest unbeaten streak to start a season in program history, second only to the 9-0-6 start that the 2014 squad enjoyed.
It is the first time in Mikuta's career that he's been named player of the week by the conference. He joins Ariza and
Saleem Diakite as men's soccer's third first-time honoree this season; Ariza claimed
his player of the week nod at the beginning of September while Diakite
nabbed his at the end of September.
