Two goals on rebounds in the second half gave the Muhlenberg men's soccer team an impressive 2-0 win against Rutgers-Camden in a clash of regionally ranked opponents.
The Scarlet Raptors (6-4-2) came in ranked fourth in Region IV and a perfect 3-0 in the tough New Jersey Athletic Conference. They were coming off an upset of nationally ranked Rowan and had not lost a game by more than one goal all season.
The Mules (7-0-5) also are ranked fourth in their region, Region V, and entered the game as one of 21 undefeated teams in Division III. They are without a loss through 12 games for only the second time in program history; only the 2014 squad (9-0-6) played more games before suffering a defeat.
Muhlenberg had the best scoring chance in the first half when sophomore
Thomas Shreiber was taken down from behind in the box. The ensuing penalty kick was saved, however, and the teams went into the break at 0-0.
The Mules finally broke through midway through the second half after sophomore
Saleem Diakite was fouled on the end line outside of the box. His free kick was headed toward the goal by senior
Trevor Mikuta. The Rutgers goalie dove to save the shot but could not control the ball, and freshman
Daniel Ariza flicked it in for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Late in the game, Muhlenberg drew another foul in the corner as it was attempting to kill the clock. Rather than keeping the ball in the corner off the restart, the Mules attacked. A shot by senior
Sim Dorsey was blocked and the ball came back to Shreiber, whose shot was saved off the line by a Scarlet Raptor back. The ball came right to Dorsey, who tapped it into the open net for his first goal of the season.
Senior
Ben Mulford stopped four shots for his 24th career shutout. He has not allowed a goal in 320 minutes.
