Postcards from Abroad catches up with Muhlenberg women's lacrosse junior Karly DiSanto, a computer science major studying in Florence, Italy, this semester.
What classes are you taking? Which class is your favorite?
I'm taking Florentine Fashion Walks, Chemistry in the Visual Arts, Everything Chocolate, Islam and Politics, and Communicating in Italian. My favorite is definitely Everything Chocolate because we learn about the health benefits and history of chocolate! We also have a lot of tastings!
Have you been able to travel at all yet?
A few of my teammates and I have traveled A LOT! It has been incredible to go to so many different places I never thought I would have been to in my life.
How have you been training while abroad?
I joined a local gym in Florence, and I go there just about every day to work out. However, we walk everywhere!!
What has been the overall hardest adjustment?
To me, one of the hardest adjustments, in the beginning, was the time difference from America. The language barrier isn't as bad as I thought it would be. However, it is still difficult to not be able to fluently speak the native language of a city that I'm living in for four months.
What made you decide to study abroad?
I studied abroad because I've always wanted to go to Italy in general and I've heard nothing but good things from people that have done it prior. I am also the first in my family to do so, and it was fun having them come visit me!
What have you learned about yourself while studying abroad?
I have definitely learned a lot about myself throughout my time here. I believe I've been able to become more independent because I had to start from scratch and find a way to navigate my way around a foreign city. Studying abroad has also allowed me to travel and experience things that I never saw myself doing ever in my life!
Any messages for your teammates back home?
Take every opportunity you're given! Not only if you go abroad, but in general. You never know what an experience may bring unless you take advantage!
