Meghan MacAskill in Copenhagen

Women's Soccer

Postcards from Abroad: Meghan MacAskill

For our next Postcard from Abroad, we travel north to Copenhagen, Denmark, where Meghan MacAskill of the women's soccer team is studying. She is a junior double major in biology and public health and has thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to travel throughout Europe this semester.

What school are you studying at, and where else have you traveled during the semester. Do you plan to travel anywhere else during the remainder of the semester as well?
I am studying at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS) in Copenhagen, Denmark. I have traveled to:
- Dublin and Cork, Ireland
- Barcelona, Spain
- Poznan, Poland
- Berlin, Germany
- Amsterdam, Netherlands
- Budapest, Hungary
- Prague, Czech Republic

I have plans to go to:
- Seville, Spain
- Rome and Florence, Italy
- Zurich and Interlaken, Switzerland
- and a road trip around Iceland for a week before coming home

What classes are you taking, and which is your favorite/why?
I am taking Medical Practice and Policy, Health Beyond Borders, Epigenetics and the Environment, and Nordic Mythology. My Medical Practice and Policy class is my core course, meaning it meets more often and explores the class topic in greater depth through field trips and hands-on activities. For this reason, it has been my favorite because I have been able to visit hospitals in Denmark, Poland and Germany to talk to doctors, witness procedures, and learn about their different healthcare systems.

Have you gotten any opportunities to play or practice your sport while abroad?
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to join a soccer team while studying in Denmark because the practice times were during one of my classes but there is a gym right across the street from my apartment so I have been going to the gym every day. I've also gone to a soccer game in Denmark and am going to one in Italy when I go to visit my teammate Sarah in April.

8844What is the main reason you decided to go abroad and what has been the best experience of the semester?
The main reason I decided to go abroad was because I had never traveled much growing up. I wanted to take advantage of a semester abroad to be able to travel, meet new people and experience a new culture. My time spent with my visiting host family has definitely been my best experience while abroad. I live in an apartment with other study abroad students but was paired up with a Danish family who I hang out with about once a week. I have really gotten to experience the Danish culture this way as well as visited some spots in Denmark that I never would have known about otherwise.

What do you miss most about being on the Muhlenberg campus?
What I miss the most about Muhlenberg is walking around campus and running into all my teammates and friends. I definitely miss seeing my team and having meals with everyone in the dining hall a lot.

What would you like to say to your teammates back in Allentown?
To my teammates back at home I just want to say good luck with spring season! It seems far away but our fall season is just around the corner so work hard! I hope everyone has had an amazing semester so far. I miss you all so much and I can't wait to see you guys in August!
