Shana Joseph

Women's Track and Field

Postcards from Abroad: Shana Joseph

We leave Europe and travel all the way to Sydney, Australia, to catch up with Shana Joseph, a junior on the women's track and field team. She is a double major in computer science and studio art studying at the University of New South Wales. Here is her report on how her experience abroad has been so far.

Have you visited any other cities or countries? If so, which was your favorite and why?
Although I have been here for three months now I've only travelled to a few places so far. I have been exploring around Sydney a lot and I am going to continue exploring around the rest of Australia in November. So far I've gone to Melbourne and over Spring Break here I travelled to Thailand, which was amazing because other than Australia that was another place that I've wanted to explore for some time. In November I plan on travelling to New Zealand, the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Whitsundays Island and the Great Barrier Reef, the Outback and more if I have the time.

What classes are you taking? Which class is your favorite?
This semester I decided to take classes that are not offered at Muhlenberg, so I am taking four different media arts classes where I am learning so many new things. I am taking CGI Lens Laboratory, Animated Worlds, Graphics Media: Experimental Typography and Photographies: Expanded Fields. My favourite class would be the first two as they are both introducing me to animation in different ways. I've always wanted to learn how to animate and now I'm learning 2D and 3D.

What made you want to go abroad?
If anyone asked what's one thing that I love to do, it would probably be travelling. I enjoy going on adventures daily and exploring what the world has to offer. Going abroad was another opportunity to live out my dreams of discovering new parts of the world. I always knew that I wanted to go abroad and I am glad that I made the decision to do so.

What are you doing to train and prepare for your sport while so far away?
While I'm away I've been doing several things to train and prepare for the season when I come back. I treat afternoons after classes like I'm back at Muhlenberg, and I go on runs and do the exercises I would normally do back at school during practice. Additionally, I sometimes take part in sporting events that my residential house participates in: basketball, soccer, handball, etc. I've also taken part in running events while I've been here. For example, there was the Sydney Tower Stairs Challenge where many of us ran up 1504 steps, which was a great experience. I've also taken part in relay races around the campus. There's a track a few miles from campus so I go there as well to get some workouts in.

Any words to your team back home?
You guys have been doing an amazing job this semester and I am so proud of each and every one of you. Continue with this momentum as we go into indoor because you guys are going to do a spectacular job. I miss you all and I can't wait to be back with all of you!
