The Muhlenberg women's tennis team opened its 2026-27 season with a strong showing at the King's Invitational, winning five of the 11 brackets.
The Mules' winners were as follows:
Charley Madlock and
Ella Pomeranz - doubles flight 2
Taylor Current and
Alexandra Downey - doubles flight 3
Current - singles flight 4
Pomeranz - singles flight 6
Sophia Xenakis - singles flight 7
Madlock and Pomeranz pulled out a tight 7-6 (7-3) match against a duo from Wilkes in the final, while Current and Downey toppled a duo from Misericordia, 6-4.
Current
(pictured above) worked hard to claim her singles title. In her first match, she eked out a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (11-9) victory, then advanced to the final by defeating a Rutgers-Camden player, 6-3, 6-2. The final was another close contest, with Current overcoming a loss in the first set against a Penn College opponent to come from behind for a 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 win.
Pomeranz won by identical 7-5, 6-3 finals against opponents from Wilkes and Lycoming.
Xenakis, making her Muhlenberg tennis debut, breezed through her bracket, defeating her first opponent from Rutgers-Camden with a "double bagel" before toppling a Wilkes player, 6-1, 6-0, in the final.
Downey advanced at fifth singles with impressive 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 wins before falling in the final to a player from Wilkes.
