Christopher Short qualified for the final in the 400 meters at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship in Birmingham, Alabama.
Short posted the seventh-fastest qualifying time, finishing in 48.02 seconds, and will race with the other seven qualifiers for the national championship on Saturday at 5:35.
Short finished last among the four runners in his heat, running just a shade off his school record of 47.97, but was in the fastest heat in an event where the finalists were determined by time, not placement in heats. The other three runners in the third heat ran 46.92 (the best qualifying time), 47.73 (third), and 47.94 (sixth). Short was in seventh place after his race and remained there rather comfortably, as only one runner in the final two heats got even close to a qualifying time.
By finishing in the top eight, Short assured himself a spot on the podium and first-team All-America status. He is the Mules' first indoor All-American since 2017.
