Mules Win Two Silvers in Triple Jump

Two silver medals in the triple jump and a school record highlighted the first day of the Centennial Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships for Muhlenberg.

Sophomore Sean McNeil came in second in the triple for the men, and senior Shira Gamson took second place for the women.

McNeil was sitting on a bronze before leaping into second place on his final jump. McNeil finished fourth at the CC indoor meet last year, moved up to third at the CC outdoor meet, and now has hopped up to second.

Gamson had the best mark entering the finals but was edged out for the gold by two centimeters. It was the highest career finish at a CC meet for Gamson, topping the bronze she won in the outdoor triple jump last May. She has placed in the top six in the triple jump in all seven CC meets during her career.

Gamson also ran on the 4x200-meter relay team, along with seniors Lauren Siesky and Niki Matthews and junior Maya Richwine, that finished fourth with a school-record time of 1:47.59. They cut nearly a full second over the previous mark of 1:48.55, which was set 20 years ago.

Richwine and Matthews qualified for the final in the 60-meter hurdles. Richwine ran a season-best 8.87, while Matthews finished in a personal-best 9.32, moving into third place on the Mules' all-time list.

Although she just missed placing, sophomore Kelly Stephen landed a huge PR in the weight throw, improving from 40-1 to 42-9½.

Freshman Charlie Vanecek (pictured above left) was in sixth place through four of the seven events in the heptathlon, posting the second-best mark in the long jump.
