Sylvyn Parham made it two national qualifiers in two years for the Muhlenberg women's wrestling program, taking third place at the NCAA Super Region 2.
The inaugural NCAA Women's Wrestling Championships are scheduled for March 6-7 in Coralville, Iowa. Last year, before the NCAA sponsored women's wrestling as a championship sport,
Kelsey Gelb qualified for the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships.
Parham began the second day of the regional qualifier in the semifinals of the 110-pound bracket and was pinned in her first bout by the top-ranked wrestler in the country, an Olympic alternate.
Parham rebounded to defeat an Eastern wrestler, 8-2, scoring three takedowns in the second period to pull away.
In the consolation final, with a bid to nationals on the line, Parham faced an Ursinus opponent who is ranked 19th in the country by The Open Mat and was a national qualifier last year. Parham nearly got pinned with about a minute left in the first period but was able to keep off her back and conceded only two points for the takedown.
Early in the second period, Parham threw her opponent to her back for four points. Parham was taken down again in the final minute, and the bout ended in a 4-4 tie, with Parham winning on criteria for having the highest single-point move.
Parham will take a 25-5 record into the national meet.
