Postcards from Abroad: Anna May

Being a committed member of a team doesn't prevent Muhlenberg athletes from enjoying the same transformative experiences that their fellow students do - like studying abroad. Every semester, a good number of Mules travel overseas, and we catch up with them in our Postcards from Abroad series.

Our first "foreign correspondent" for the Spring 2025 semester is women's soccer junior Anna May, an accounting major and business administration minor
who is studying in Florence, Italy. Here's what she had to say about her experience:

What made you decide to study abroad?
Studying abroad has always been something I knew I wanted to do. My parents strongly encouraged it, and my older siblings studied abroad and had incredible experiences. It's a unique opportunity that you can really only take advantage of at this stage in life, and I knew I couldn't pass it up.

What has been your favorite part about studying abroad?
I've really enjoyed the freedom and independence that comes with living abroad. Florence is such a walkable city, which means I discover something new every day — whether it's a hidden bakery, a new clothing shop, or a street I hadn't noticed before. I also love learning about Italian and Florentine culture. For example, grocery shopping happens more frequently here, often every two days, and most stores close from 2-6pm for a midday rest period. Little cultural differences like these make the experience even more fun.

What is one thing you miss about Muhlenberg?
This is the easiest question to answer: my teammates and friends!

What has been your favorite place you've visited, and why?
Interlaken has been my favorite destination so far. Switzerland is absolutely breathtaking and unlike anywhere else I've visited in Europe. One of the highlights was skiing with friends on a mountain known as "the top of Europe" which was an unforgettable experience. The views were amazing, and the town itself had such a welcoming and distinct culture. It was easily my favorite activity so far, and I hope I get the chance to do it again.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about studying abroad?
Do it! The idea of living in a new country for a few months can feel overwhelming, but it's truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I'm only five weeks in, and it's already been a life-changing experience. There's no other time in life when you can live in another country and travel extensively without major responsibilities like a full-time job. If you have the chance to study abroad, take it!

How have you kept up with your sport while abroad?
Our program provides us with a gym that I have been using. It is also easier to run when you can explore a new street or bridge every time you step outside of your apartment. Our program also does sports nights on Mondays and people get together to play soccer.
