Thran Scores Twice as Mules Defeat Bulldogs

Kaylie Thran led the way with a pair of first-half goals as the Muhlenberg Mules took down the visiting DeSales Bulldogs 2-1.

The freshman's first strike opened the scoring 22 minutes into the contest. Thran took the pass from Devon Cheeseman, made a move, and ripped a shot into the nearside corner of the net. She doubled the Muhlenberg advantage about eight minutes later courtesy of a Madelyn Hill dime. Hill, nearly parallel with the six-yard-box, floated a pass past the goalkeeper and onto the waiting foot of Thran, who smacked it home.

It is the second time in the past week a Mule has had a two-goal game, as Reilly Sullivan did so on August 30 against Coast Guard.

That second score proved to be the difference, as the Bulldogs came out and played inspired soccer in the second half. They sent 11 shots towards Muhlenberg keeper Megan Stairs in the first 21 minutes of the second stanza. One went in, five went wide or were blocked, and five were corralled by Stairs. That was part of a nine-save day for the junior keeper.

The improvements for the Muhlenberg offense in 2025 cannot be understated. The Mules have scored seven goals in their first three games this season; last season, that number was just 11 in 18 games. In addition, the Mules scored goal number seven in their fourteenth game in 2024. Much of that difference can be attributed to the contributions of the underclassmen, as they are responsible for 20 of the team's 22 total points thus far.

This is the first time Muhlenberg has defeated DeSales since September 27, 2016. That day, the Mules took down the Bulldogs 2-1 at Varsity Field.
