The Muhlenberg men's track and field team closed out the Centennial Conference Championships by winning a pair of gold medals.
First-place finishes by the 4x100-meter relay team (junior
Trevor Hitchcock, sophomore
Joshua Castro and seniors
James Nye and
Russell Neuwirth) and junior javelin thrower
Noel House lifted the Mules to a fifth-place finish, just three points away from third place. The Mules scored 90 points, nine more than last year, tying for their most points in a complete CC meet since 2012.
The Muhlenberg women finished with 31 points, four more than last year, to place eighth. Freshman
Avery McNulty followed up her gold medal in the high jump by placing seventh in the javelin, while freshman
Shira Gamson came in sixth in the triple jump and anchored the 4x100 squad that placed seventh.
The men's 4x100 team tied an 11-year-old school record by finishing in 42.23 to beat top-seeded McDaniel by 14 hundredths of a second. It was the first 4x100 gold for the Mules since 2017 and the second medal for the foursome, who earned bronze in the 4x200 at the CC indoor meet in February. They improved on their previous best of 43.13 by almost a full second.
House won his second straight gold in the javelin, taking the lead on his third attempt and improving his mark on his fourth and sixth throws, ending up a 192-2 to win by almost 3 feet. House is the fourth Mule to win the javelin multiple times at the CC meet; the Muhlenberg men have won eight of the last 11 golds in the jav.
Senior
John Panny earned a bronze medal, his seventh career CC medal, by placing third in the triple jump. His jump of 45-9¾ was just two inches short of the school record.
Neuwirth contributed to team points in four events on the final day of the meet. After starting out the day by anchoring the 4x100 team, he came in fourth in the 100 and fifth in the 200 (lowering his personal best for the second straight day) before leading off the fifth-place 4x400 team in the final event of the meet.
Senior
Elek Ferency placed in all three throws in which he competed, coming in seventh in the hammer, fourth in the discus and sixth in the shot put. Freshman
Mike Powel came in fifth in the shot put, moving into seventh place on the all-time performance list with a personal-best throw of 47-2¼.
