The final stop for our Postcards from Abroad series is Florence, Italy, where we check in with Carly DeNigris, a biology major and member of the Muhlenberg women's soccer team. Here is a report on her time abroad.
Have you visited any other cities or countries other than your home base? If so, where was your favorite and why?
I have visited so many beautiful places since I started my time abroad. I spent a weekend in Geneva, Switzerland, and then another in Madrid and Barcelona, Spain. This past week was our spring break and I traveled to Prague, Amsterdam and Paris. I've also been to plenty of other cities (besides Florence) in Italy: Venice, Verona, Rome, Naples, Capri, Pompeii, Milan and many more! Picking a favorite place is challenging because they are all so unique and exciting in their own ways, but being able to see a soccer game at Camp Nou in Barcelona was an unreal experience, and I was able to meet up with fellow Mule Gary Pershad for the trip, which was awesome. We also had great weather in Paris, which made for an amazing picnic under the Eiffel Tower. I also still have plans to go to London, Munich, and Malta that I am looking forward to.
What classes are you taking? What class is your favorite?
I am taking Elementary Italian, Health and Fitness in the Mediterranean, Everything Chocolate, and iPhoneography. My favorite class would have to be Health and Fitness in the Mediterranean because just the other week we spent an hour and a half biking around the streets of Florence and the park right near my apartment, and then this past week we spent our time learning about the ways they incorporate wine into their diets. This semester is definitely a lighter semester for me, but I am taking full advantage of everything it has to offer.
What made you want to go abroad?
All of my older brothers studied abroad at some point of their lives, and my parents were really encouraging because it is an experience you will most likely never be able to have again in your life. I also previously have traveled around central Europe and wanted to go back to Europe. The fact that a lot of my previous teammates studied abroad in Florence had a big influence on where I decided to study abroad as well, and I couldn't be happier with my choice!
What are you doing to train and prepare for your sport while so far away?
At first, I tried to run around the streets of Florence, but since the streets and sidewalks are so narrow, I would usually get caught behind some locals casually walking down the streets. Now, after discovering the park about a half-mile away from my apartment, I run up and down it right along the Arno River. I can spend a couple of hours out there enjoying the views, while still getting in a good workout.
Any words to your team back home?
LKM, I miss you all so much, but I know that spring season is treating you guys well. I'm so excited to take the Centennial Conference head on with you guys next semester, and I can't wait to be back on the same pitch as all of you. Finish out the semester strong, and I'll see you all so soon!
