Men's Soccer

Postcards from Abroad: Gary Pershad

Postcards from Abroad heads to Spain to visit with junior Gary Pershad of the Muhlenberg men's soccer team. A business administration major (marketing concentration), he is studying in Madrid this semester.

Have you visited any other cities or countries other than your home base? If so, where was your favorite and why?
I have visited several cities within Spain, but I have only left the country once so far. I've been to Toledo, Barcelona, Seville, Salamanca, Arlanza, Valencia and Burgos in Spain and I've been to Rome and Florence in Italy. I still have a trip to Amsterdam and London to look forward to as well. So far, Florence was the best. It's a beautiful city and the trip was very relaxed and easy going, which made the experience that much better. I can see why so many Muhlenberg students go to study there! Piazza Michelangelo alone made the entire trip worth it and of course the food is amazing!

Gary Pershad abroadWhat classes are you taking? What class is your favorite?
I am taking Intro Women and Gender Studies, Western Art History, International Terrorism and Marketing Management. My favorite so far is easily Marketing Management. I have a great professor and we have some very interesting conversations regarding the marketing world. I have learned so much in the class already. We have a lot projects to where we get to apply what we learned and combine it with what we already know, which really makes the class enjoyable. There never really is a boring class period in Marketing Management.

What made you want to go abroad?
I always knew that I wanted to go abroad, but I was never sure where until last year. I traveled a great deal when I was young and even in high school. My high school focused on global and international studies, allowing me to travel extensively with the school. In a two-year span, I went to Costa Rica and China, each for nine days, and loved the experience. I wanted to explore in college and got the opportunity to travel to Holland with the soccer team for preseason but I didn't want my travels to end there. After talking to students who went abroad, I knew it was what I wanted to do and it was what my life has prepared me for thus far, so I decided to pack up and go abroad!

What are you doing to train and prepare for your sport while so far away?
During the week I run through this massive park, Casa de Campo, near my house, and if I'm around on the weekends I'll look for some pickup soccer at a popular soccer complex in the city. I would have played for the SLU Madrid soccer team, but unfortunately their season was cancelled due to some legal complications regarding the team's home field. Since I'm in Spain, soccer games are broadcast at a reasonable viewing time so I'm able to watch plenty of soccer on TV and in person! I've recently completed the La Liga trifecta by viewing Atletico Madrid vs. Barcelona at Vicente Calderon, Barcelona vs. Celta Vigo at Nou Camp and Real Madrid vs. Real Betis at Santiago Bernabeu. I'm really embracing the soccer culture over here.

Any words to your team back home?
Of course! Boys, first things first, Roll Mules!! I miss you all a lot and I hope the semester is going well. I know you all are working hard both on and off the field back home and know that I'm doing the same here. Next season will be our season and you heard that here first! Just hold down the fort until I cross the pond and then we can take over the Centennial Conference as a complete team!! HERE WE GO!!
