The Muhlenberg men's soccer team came back once but not a second time and lost a well-played game to 20th-ranked Messiah, 2-1.
The Falcons (11-1-1), who have not lost since the opening day of the season, jumped on top early, scoring a goal a little more than four minutes into the game.
The Mules (5-5-2) tied the game midway through the first half, scoring off a long throw by graduate student
Lorenzo Vargas-Clarke for the second straight game. Vargas-Clarke's throw went into the middle of the box, and the ball pinged around before the Messiah goalie knocked it to the ground. It fell right to the feet of junior
Mack Metcalf, who cut it back to graduate student
Sim Dorsey for the putaway. It was Dorsey's second consecutive game with a goal.
Messiah scored what proved to be the winner on a breakaway 20 minutes into the second half.
Muhlenberg had a great chance to equalize again with less than eight minutes remaining, but the Falcon goalie made a tough save on a shot by freshman
Jake Marks.
Sophomore
Nico Famularo (pictured above) made a career-high 9 saves to keep the Mules within striking distance in a game in which they were outshot, 24-9.
Of the Mules' five losses, three are to teams ranked in the top five in this week's United Soccer Coaches Region V poll.
