Kicks, Headers, and Throws Lead Mules to Conference Rout

The Muhlenberg men's soccer team scored five times in four different ways en route to routing the visiting McDaniel Green Terror 5-0 on Saturday evening.

Junior Mack Metcalf got the scoring started just under 20 minutes into the game with the first goal of his career. Metcalf took a free kick from about 30 yards out and blew it past the goaltender on the right side for the early advantage.

Graduate student Lorenzo Vargas-Clarke (pictured) brought the throws into the mix about 15 minutes later. Vargas-Clarke, known for his sensational throw-in ability, was gifted an opportunity to show that off from about even with the McDaniel 18-yard-box. He wound up and fired it 99% of the way towards the goal, where junior Owen Zoeller tapped it in for his second goal of the season. Junior Saleem Diakite built on that momentum with his fifth goal of the year a few minutes later after settling a bouncing ball near the women's lacrosse restraining line. He took a couple of dribbles and fired a rocket of a shot that clanged off of the left post and into the net for a 3-0 lead.

Graduate student Sim Dorsey joined in on the party with a second-chance opportunity a few minutes into the latter half. First, sophomore Daniel Ariza fired a straight-on shot that sailed high and banged off the crossbar and into the box. Dorsey was waiting almost exactly where the ball was going and headed it into the net for his first goal of the season.

Not to be outdone, Diakite capped off the scoring with another tally a few minutes later. Danny Patruno gave him the ball about 10 yards outside of the 18-yard box, and Diakite did the rest, weaving through multiple defenders before depositing the ball in the back of the net.
