After seeing the popularity in our Postcards from Abroad series last semester, we decided to bring it back and check on our athletes currently studying abroad. We are first traveling off to Edinburgh, Scotland, to catch up with women's golf junior Ashley Noel. She is a accounting major with a minor in history, and here she shares her experiences while abroad in Europe. Â Â
Have you visited any other cities or countries other than your home base? If so, where was your favorite and why?
Yes, I have had the chance to visit a few other places so far. I was able to visit places like London, Ireland, Paris, the Highlands of Scotland, and I have plans to visit Spain for Spring Break at the beginning of April. Everywhere I have been so far has been amazing. I loved the history of London, the countryside in Ireland, and the food in Paris. Â Â
What classes are you taking? What class is your favorite?
I am taking three classes while I am abroad. The first is a Cost and Managerial Accounting course. The second is an Innovation and Entrepreneurship Business class that has really taught me more about international innovation and the sharing of ideas across the world. My last, and favorite, course is called Scottish History since 1914. This is my modern Scottish history course, which I really enjoy. The other cool thing about learning the history of Scotland is that there are is history all over the city of Edinburgh so even walking to campus for class I feel immersed in the past.
What made you want to go abroad?
I think that hearing about the experiences of family members and friends was what pushed me to want to go. Hearing travel stories and about the friends they made while being able to live in a totally new place was really cool. I also really wanted a chance to travel. I travel within the U.S. with my family but I had never been to Europe before coming to study, so every day is a new adventure.
What are you doing to train and prepare for your sport while so far away?
The University gym is only a two-minute walk from my front door so I try to get there to lift a few times a week. Edinburgh is also a great place to hike, which I enjoy doing with friends during the week. Once the weather gets warmer here I plan to get out and hit the links. There are so many beautiful golf courses in Scotland and I hope to play as many as I can once the weather permits.Â
Any words to your team back home?
To my golf girls -Â I know you guys are going to do well this season and I wish you the best of luck. I know you girls will do big things in the Conference and I cannot wait to read about each tournament on the Berg website! I miss you guys! A big quote that has been motivating me to keep in the swing of things (haha golf humor): "Success in golf depends less on strength of body than upon strength of mind and character" - Arnold Palmer.
