Four members of the champion Muhlenberg women's basketball team were recognized on the
All-Centennial Conference team.
Sophomores
Brandi Vallely and
Rachel Plotke were named to the first team, senior
Christina Santone earned second-team honors, and
Ron Rohn was tabbed coach of the year.
Vallely and Plotke are the first pair of sophomores on the same team to be named to the All-CC first team in 20 years. Their selections extend Muhlenberg's record streak of having at least one player on the first team to 11 years. It's the fifth time the Mules have had two first-team honorees.
Vallely, a unanimous selection, ranks in the top 10 in the CC in assists (first), steals (first), assist-to-turnover ratio (second), free-throw percentage (fourth), scoring (sixth), field-goal percentage (sixth) and rebounding (seventh). Her Division III-leading season total of 243 shattered the CC mark of 166 and is the 10th-highest season mark in Division III history.
A three-time player of the week and the CC playoff MVP, Vallely has a Division III-record five triple-doubles this season – one fewer than the total number of triple-doubles recorded by CC players in the first 22 years of the league's existence.
Plotke is the third-leading scorer in the CC, averaging 15.1 points per game, and leads the league in both three-pointers made per game and three-point field-goal percentage (.473). She ranks fourth in Division III in the latter category. In CC games, Plotke shot 50.5 percent from behind the arc.
Plotke also has excelled in shooting from a shorter distance, breaking the CC record for consecutive free throws made. She is a perfect 54-for-54 this season and has a streak of 55 dating back to last year. The Division III record for consecutive free throws made in a season is 61.
Santone showed tremendous improvement in her overall game to emerge as one of the top bigs in the CC. She leads the league in blocked shots (95) and field-goal percentage (.506) and is fourth in rebounding (8.8 per game) and 11th in scoring (12.3 per game). The 6-2 center came on strong in the latter half of the season, averaging 16.4 points and 9.9 rebounds while shooting 55.3 percent from the field over the last 11 games.
Santone ranks fourth in CC history with her school-record total of 211 career blocked shots. She shattered her own school record for blocked shots in a season and twice tied her mark of seven blocks in a game.
Rohn was named coach of the year for the second time; he also was honored in 2009. After graduating six seniors from last year's CC championship team, Rohn took a team of mostly unproven players and led them to the CC regular-season title, the CC championship and a ranking inside the Division III top 15 for most of the season.
Rohn recorded his 300th career win at Muhlenberg three weeks ago and will enter the NCAA Tournament with a career record of 305-102 for a winning percentage of .749 – the best by any basketball coach in CC history.
Ranked 12th in the new
D3hoops.com poll, Muhlenberg will host St. John Fisher in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.
