Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Comes Back to Edge Haverford in Nailbiter

An eight-point deficit with three minutes remaining was no match for the Muhlenberg Mules, who got hot at the right time and defeated the Haverford Fords 56-54.

Haverford scored its last points of the game on a three-pointer with 3:07 remaining to make it 54-46 in favor of the hosts. Despite not having led since the first quarter, the Mules were undeterred and promptly returned serve with a three of their own by Avery McNulty. 30 seconds later, McNulty picked off a pass with the shot clock winding down.  Katie McGrath found Linzy Roberson in the corner on the ensuing fast break for a second straight assist. Like McNulty, she drilled it to cut the deficit to just two with two minutes to go.

After a stop on the next possession, the Mules were handed a gift in the form of two technical free throws. The senior McGrath stepped to the line with a chance to tie it at 54 and calmly swished both. Now, the goal was to take the lead. For that, head coach Ron Rohn and associate head coach Sadie Nelson turned to sophomore Veronica Dawson (pictured above). To that point, the forward was Muhlenberg's go-to woman, leading the team with 17 points. Dawson caught the entry pass on the right block, put up a layup, and was blocked. She then grabbed her own miss and laid it up and in before the defense could recover for the 56-54 lead.

Over the final 105 seconds, the Mules would shut down the Haverford offense on four of five possessions to end the game. The Fords procured a pair of free throws and a chance to tie with eight seconds remaining, but the shooter missed both.

Dawson's 19 points and 12 rebounds were both team-highs and represent her first double-double of the season. Nine of those 12 boards came on the offensive end. Roberson was the only other Mule to reach double-figures in scoring with 10 points, and the freshman finished one rebound short of the first double-double of her career.

With the win, Muhlenberg notches back-to-back conference wins to move to 2-0 in Centennial Conference action. The Mules also return to .500 overall at 5-5.
