The Muhlenberg women's basketball team made a stirring comeback before eventually falling to Haverford, 61-51.
The Mules (6-7, 2-6) missed their first 15 shots from the field and trailed 18-2 in the final minute of the first quarter. Freshman
Emily Vaughan finally broke the ice with a three-pointer, giving Muhlenberg some momentum heading into the second period.
Muhlenberg scored the first nine points of the second quarter to close to within four and make it a game.Â
Down 24-20 at halftime, the Mules got baskets from freshman
Rachel Saxton and senior
Amanda Gorski to draw even. Another jumper from Saxton tied the game again at 26, but the Fords (11-5, 8-4) banked in a three to take the lead for good.
The Mules made another big comeback later in the quarter, cutting a 10-point deficit to three on the strength of back-to-back threes by Saxton and sophomore
Abigail Scheidel.
Muhlenberg was within one point twice in the fourth quarter, the last time at 48-47 with five minutes to go, but Haverford, the two-time defending Centennial Conference champion, pulled away down the stretch.
