Muhlenberg head football coach
Nate Milne won two major awards this week.
Milne was named Division III National Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association and Andy Talley Regional Coach of the Year by the Maxwell Football Club.
Milne was presented with the AFCAÂ award at the group's annual convention in Nashville, Tennessee, along with the FCS, Division II and NAIA national coaches of the year. Milne won the award in just his second season as head coach; no Division III coach has ever been named national coach of the year following his first season.
Milne is believed to be the first coach in any sport at Muhlenberg to be named national coach of the year.
The Maxwell Football Club will be presented on Friday, March 6, 2020, at the 83rd Maxwell Club National Awards Gala at the Tropicana Casino Resort in Atlantic City, N.J. Also slated to receive awards at the event are Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow of LSU (Maxwell Award), Chase Young of Ohio State (Chuck Bednarik Award), Ed Orgeron of LSU (George Munger Award) and NFL Hall-of-Famer Anthony Muñoz (Tropicana Legends Award).
Founded in 1935, the MFC promotes and recognizes excellence at all levels of football from youth leagues through the professional ranks. Two Muhlenberg players (Jackie McDonald and Tony Saddler) won the Maxwell Award as Eastern College Football Player of the Week in the 1950s.
Recent winners of the Andy Talley Regional Coach of the Year include James Franklin of Penn State and Talley, the former Villanova coach who also is founder of the Andy Talley Bone Marrow Foundation, which Muhlenberg partners with annually at its
"Dig in for Duke" bone marrow registration drive.
Milne coached the Mules to their best season ever in 2019. They set a school record with 13 wins and reached as high as No. 4 in the Division III polls, ending the year ranked
No. 5 by the AFCA and
No. 7 by D3football.com. Muhlenberg finished the regular season undefeated for the first time since 2007 and claimed its first outright Centennial Conference title since 2008.
Muhlenberg's lone loss was to eventual national champion North Central in the NCAA "Final Four." During their run, the Mules became the first team in Division III history to record shutouts in their NCAA Tournament first- and second-round games.
Milne has a record of 24-3 in his two years, leading the Mules to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time in 2018 and the NCAA semifinals for the first time in 2019. Muhlenberg finished both seasons ranked in the top 10 in Division III, and Milne was named Centennial Conference coach of the year both seasons.
