Postcards from Abroad heads to Europe to visit Karolyn Kawa of the Muhlenberg women's soccer team. Kawa is a business administration major with a minor in innovation and entrepreneurship and is currently studying in Vienna, Austria.
What made you want to go abroad?
I decided to study abroad because I wanted to take advantage of the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about business and other subjects through a diverse lens and an international perspective. I also really love to travel, and I wanted to immerse myself in an extremely different way of life. I was excited to experience new cultures and try new food. Â
What classes are you taking? Which class is your favorite?
I am taking German I, Modern Architecture in Vienna, Responses to the Holocaust in Literature, International Business and Marketing in Central Europe, and Music in Performance. My favorite classes are Modern Architecture in Vienna and International Business and Marketing in Central Europe, because I get to travel on excursions throughout the city of Vienna. I get to see traditional and modern architecture that I didn't even know about before, and I visit all different types of businesses and learn about their unique marketing strategies.Â
Have you been able to travel at all yet?
Yes, I've traveled to Budapest in Hungary, Dublin and Galway in Ireland, Prague in the Czech Republic and Krakow in Poland! I'm also excited to travel to Spain and Germany, as well as other parts of Austria, like Salzburg. I'm really lucky to have the opportunity to travel to so many different countries, because they're all so different and unique.
How have you been preparing for your sport while abroad?
I run and lift consistently throughout the week at the local international sports center to stay in great shape for soccer. I also run in parks throughout the city, since the weather has been beautiful. I hope to watch a professional soccer game here in Austria too!Â
What do you miss most about Muhlenberg?
I miss all of the people at Muhlenberg the most, and I miss being with all my teammates so much!Â
