We now travel to Denmark to catch up with Erin Duca, a junior on the women's lacrosse team. She is currently studying at the Danish Institute of Scandinavia. She is a double major in media & communications and film studies. Here is her report on how her experience abroad has been so far.
What classes are you taking? Â What class is your favorite?
The classes that I am taking are New Media and Changing Communities, Meaning of Style, Environmental Impact of Humans: A European Perspective, and Glued to the Set: TV Shows, Norms and Culture. My favorite class is definitely my core class, New Media and Changing Communities, because I really love my teacher and the environment she creates in our classroom. I have never experienced such an interactive and innovative class before in my life and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to do this program and is interested in media and communications.
From day one my teacher made sure that we knew that she wanted us to be able to come into the classroom and talk with our fellow classmates, not just sit down and look at our phones until the class started. This class is about how communication and collaboration are incorporated into our everyday lives and how technology either influences and or impacts these two things. We have had one study tour so far, in which my class went to Sweden for a week and got to talk to people who worked at newspaper companies and media companies, and we even got to visit Microsoft. We head to Dublin for our long study tour week pretty soon and I really can't wait because I love this class and the people in it!
Have you visited any other countries?
So far I've only been to Sweden, but I plan on visiting Barcelona, Florence, Norway, Switzerland and Amsterdam. I am going to visit Rome, Prague, and Berlin in a few weeks with some friends as well!
What made you want to go abroad?
I always knew I wanted to go abroad because it's unlike any experience you can have. To have the opportunity of being able to study and immerse yourself not just in a new country, but a new culture is an experience that I highly encourage anyone to take advantage of. You really won't get another chance like this to do something so incredible and explore both the new places you go to and things within yourself. During this experience, you really find out things about yourself that you would have never known about.
What are you doing to train and prepare for your sport while so far away?
I have been playing on a lacrosse club team and I have played in a few club soccer practices as well. It's been really fun and has allowed me to meet a lot of new people. With the relaxed nature of playing on a club team, it has allowed me to remember why I really do love both of these sports because playing at such a high level now, it can be easy to focus on the goals that you have and the pressure that is around, so it's important to have these moments and remember why I started playing in the first place.
Any words to your team back home?
I hope that fall ball went great; you guys look like you're having a good time and are training hard! Keep it up and we are going to have a really great and successful season!!
