Eden Clark's nearly unhittable stretch has earned her the first NFCA National Pitcher of the Week award in the history of the Muhlenberg softball program. The freshmen also took home Centennial Conference pitcher of the week.
She was nearly unhittable over the course of her three starts. The freshman went 3-0 with a 0.44 ERA, allowing only four hits and striking out 29 in 16 innings while holding opponents to a .077 batting average. Clark began the week by pitching six innings of one-hit ball at Ursinus and tying a school record for freshmen by striking out 12; no Muhlenberg pitcher has fanned more in a game since 1991.
Clark recorded her first career complete game and shutout against DeSales two days later on April 16, giving up three hits and fanning eight to become the fifth different Mule to strike out 100 batters in a season. The rookie then closed her exceptional week by pitching a five-inning no-hitter against McDaniel. After walking the leadoff batter on four pitches, she retired the last 15 batters she faced, striking out nine, in the Mules' third all-time no-hitter in a Centennial Conference game.
That win over McDaniel also marked the Mules' 11 straight victory, six of which have been credited to Clark's ledger. Over that stretch, the rookie's tossed 32 innings over six starts and allowed just two runs for a 0.44 ERA. She's struck out 44 batters and allowed just 12 hits as well.
The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) began handing out weekly pitcher and players of the week beginning in at least 2000, and this is the first time a Mule has claimed either honor. It's also the second time this season that a Muhlenberg softball player has earned back-to-back CC weekly honors, as fellow hurler
Morgan Bobrowski did so on March 3 and March 10.
