A combined five-hit shutout gave the Muhlenberg softball team a 4-0 win at DeSales and a split of a non-conference doubleheader.
Senior
Justine Bergara and sophomore
Samantha Fehrenbach blanked the Bulldogs (5-9) in the nightcap for the Mules' fifth shutout of the season, and their third in the last four games. Bergara pitched into the fifth, and Fehrenbach tossed the final 2.2 innings to earn her fourth career save. Fehrenbach got the key out when she fielded a comebacker and threw home for a force with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the fifth.
Muhlenberg (12-6) got three of its four runs on one swing of the bat. With the bases loaded and two out in the top of the fourth, senior
Ava Calabrese (pictured above) dunked a ball inside the right-field foul line to plate two runs, and the third came home when the throw from the outfield got loose.
The Mules added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a pinch-hit double by junior
Maddy Svenningsen and a run-scoring triple by junior
Scooter Hulsen.
Hulsen also drove in a run with a seventh-inning triple in the opener, a 6-3 DeSales win. It's the second straight year a Muhlenberg player has tripled in both ends of a doubleheader; prior to last year that hadn't happened since 2010.
Senior
Kaya Mahy, named
Centennial Conference player of the week earlier in the day, was responsible for the Mules' second run when she blasted a pitch over the fence in center for her sixth home run of the season.
