With not only the year 2025 coming to an end, but also the first quarter century of the 2000s, we thought it would be appropriate to look back at the best Muhlenberg teams of the last 25 years.
The top 25 teams of 2000-2025 will be presented in three installments, and at the end fans will have the opportunity to vote for the top team of the quarter century!
Here's how we came up with the list:
• We excluded women's wrestling, which has only one complete season under its belt. We expect that there will be plenty of great women's wrestling teams to choose from in 2050 when we do the half-century review!
• We combined the indoor and outdoor track and field teams into one sport.
• That leaves 20 sports, each of which got one of its teams on the list from 6-25.
• Five sports were given a second team on the list, and it is from those five that fans will vote for the top Mule team of the quarter century.
Teams 25-16 were revealed yesterday, the top five will be revealed on Friday, and here are teams 15 through 6:
15 Men's Wrestling 2019-20
It was a most extraordinary season with a most unsatisfactory ending, as the NCAA Championships were cancelled due to Covid just hours before they were to begin. How the Mules' three national qualifiers would have done, we'll never know, but we do know this: Muhlenberg went 18-4 to tie the school record for wins in a season, was undefeated in Centennial Conference dual meets, and finished second at the CC Championships by six points.
14 Softball 2001
Sitting at 7-11 after playing a tough non-conference schedule to open the season, the Mules won 16 of their next 20 games, culminating in a 3-0 showing at the first Centennial Conference playoff tournament. Muhlenberg went on to split four games at the NCAA Atlantic Regional at Roanoke to finish with a 25-17 record. The CC title was the second straight for the Mules.
13 Men's Golf 2001
How dominant was Muhlenberg at the 2001 Centennial Conference Championships? The tournament medalist shot a team-worst 83 in the final round, but the Mules still extended their 27-stroke lead entering the round and won by 33 - still the third-highest margin of victory in the history of the CC meet. Muhlenberg's other three CC titles were by a total of 10 strokes.
12 Women's Tennis 2004
After sharing the Centennial Conference championship two years earlier, Muhlenberg won it outright in 2004, sweeping through the league with a perfect 10-0 record. The Mules opened their CC slate with a 5-4 win against nationally ranked Swarthmore and won six of their last nine CC matches by 9-0 shutout. They finished the season with a 12-3 overall record, tying the school record for wins.
11 Field Hockey 2016
Muhlenberg won its first 11 games and barely slowed down, finishing with a record of 18-3 to break a 27-year-old school record for wins. The last three of the victories came in the ECAC Tournament, giving the Mules their first title. Muhlenberg was ranked in the top 20 in Division III for most of the season (as high as 12th), tied for first place in the Centennial Conference with a 9-1 mark, and set a school record for goals scored in a season (61).
10 Men's Cross Country 2006
The Mules tied their best finish ever at both the Centennial Conference (second) and NCAA Mideast Regional (fourth) meets and, for the first time in program history, earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships, where they placed 29th. Muhlenberg finished in the top five in every race other than the national meet, including the DeSales Invitational, where it scored its first win at a large (20 or more teams) invitational ever.
9 Men's Soccer 2010
The highest-ranking team on our list that
didn't win the Centennial Conference championship, the Mules went 13-3-6, with their first two losses coming to ninth-ranked Swarthmore, both by one goal, the second time in double overtime in the CC title game. Muhlenberg earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament and recorded wins against Keene State and host Stevens - breaking a 34-game home unbeaten streak - to reach the "Sweet 16." The Mules were ranked 12th in the final Division III poll.
8 Women's Soccer 2003
After dropping their Centennial Conference opener at McDaniel, the Mules reeled off a 13-game unbeaten streak that included wins in their last nine CC matches and in both games of the CC Tournament. Included in the run was a 2-0 shutout of defending CC champion Johns Hopkins. Muhlenberg hosted an NCAA regional, advancing to the final before suffering a 1-0 loss to No. 2 Scranton, at the time the only undefeated team in Division III, in a close game. The Mules finished with a 16-4-2 record and a No. 23 national ranking.
7 Women's Basketball 2010-11
Muhlenberg reached the "Sweet 16" of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years with a pair of dramatic comeback wins. The Mules defeated Williams, 64-63, on a three-pointer with 1.0 second left, then overcame a 17-point halftime deficit to knock off host Rochester, 74-69. Muhlenberg's final record of 23-6 included a 72-61 win against Johns Hopkins - a team it lost to twice in the regular season - in the Centennial Conference championship game. The Mules were ranked 15th in the final Division III poll.
6 Football 2007
Picked fifth in the Centennial Conference preseason poll, the Mules wound up ranked eighth in the country after putting together one of the most remarkable years in program history. Muhlenberg went undefeated (10-0) in the regular season for the first time since the College first fielded an intercollegiate football team in 1900, won its first outright CC championship, set a school record for wins (11), and advanced to the second round of the NCAA playoffs with a 31-21 home win against Salisbury. The Mules recorded four shutouts in the first seven games and ended the year in the top 10 in Division III in six defensive categories.
