Postcards from Abroad takes its first trip of the Fall 2025 semester, flying to Copenhagen, Denmark, to catch up with junior softball player and neuroscience major Abby Liebowitz.
What made you decide to study abroad?
I wanted the chance to live and study in Europe as well as travel. This was an amazing opportunity to experience something new, and I wanted to take advantage of it.
What has been your favorite part about studying abroad?
Getting to travel, of course. But really just getting to meet so many amazing people from different schools and countries.
Tell us about one specific experience you've had while abroad that has been especially memorable.
I would say the first night here with all of my roommates! We clicked instantly and they made adjusting to Copenhagen 10 times easier.
What are the biggest challenges you've had to overcome in the process of adapting to life in a different country?Â
It has been fairly easy to adjust but it's definitely different than being back at Muhlenberg. The biggest difference is that everything isn't just a short walk from each other and that I need to take the Metro from my apartment to get to class.
Have you visited any other cities or countries? If so, which was your favorite and why?
I have visited other cities in Denmark as well as other countries. I would say Amsterdam was my favorite! It was so much fun and very different from Copenhagen, plus I loved the history!
What classes are you taking? Which has been your favorite?Â
I'm taking four classes: Neuroscience of Fear and Anxiety, Social Brain: Neuropsychology of Social Behavior, What's So Funny?, and Conspiracy Theories and Historical Controversies. While I love my neuroscience class, Conspiracy Theories and Historical Controversies is my favorite because it's the most unique and you wouldn't see it offered everywhere.
What advice would you give someone thinking about studying abroad?
Take this opportunity and don't let fear hold you back! Don't pick the city that other Muhlenberg students are going to just because they'll be there. Pick the city you think you'll enjoy most!
How have you kept up with your sport while abroad?Â
I've gone to the gym and have been able to pitch with my friends, who are also Centennial Conference softball players. We're very happy that it hasn't gotten too cold just yet!
More than 45% of Muhlenberg students participate in over 150 approved global education programs worldwide, and being a committed member of a team doesn't prevent Mule athletes from enjoying the same transformative experiences that their fellow students do.  A recent study by The Forum on Education Abroad found that students who participate in education abroad earn on average $4,159 more in their first job after graduation than those who do not.Â
