Two members of the Muhlenberg football team earned weekly honors from the Centennial Conference for their contributions to a 27-23 win against 16th-ranked Carnegie Mellon.
Sophomore quarterback
Luke Spang was named offensive player of the week, while junior cornerback
Jeffrey Lopez got the nod as defensive player of the week.
Spang came off the bench after the Mules' starter was injured in the second quarter and engineered a fourth-quarter comeback from 16 points down. On Muhlenberg's three late touchdown drives, Spang rushed for 40 yards and a touchdown while going 5-for-6 for 93 yards through the air. Four of his completions were on third down, and all of them went for first downs. Spang also rushed for 13 yards on a third-and-9 and completed a two-point conversion pass. For the game, he threw for a career-high 227 yards and rushed for a career-high 49 yards and two scores.Â
Lopez intercepted a pass in the end zone as time expired to seal the win. He also recorded a team-leading five solo tackles for a defense that held the Tartans' quarterback to a 109.0 rating, well below his season rating of 170.4 coming into the game.Â
It's the second time in four weeks that the Mules have won two of the three CC awards: After the Ursinus game, Muhlenberg players honored were senior
Dante Mahaffey (offensive) and sophomore
Chris Holland (special teams). The last time Muhlenberg had the offensive and defensive players of the week was 2017.
The win improved Muhlenberg's record to 6-1, ensuring a winning record for the 15th consecutive season. The Mules face another nationally ranked opponent at home this week in No. 3 Johns Hopkins.
