The Muhlenberg women's basketball team used a barrage of three-pointers to pick up a key home win, 66-54 against Washington College.
With three weeks to go in the regular season, the Mules (11-8, 6-8) are tied for sixth place in the Centennial Conference, one game behind the two teams tied for fourth place, Ursinus and Swarthmore. They have already swept Ursinus and host Swarthmore in another big home game on Wednesday.
Junior
Ava Connolly scored a career-high 27 points to lead three players in double figures. Junior
Rachel Saxton netted 15 points and junior
Emily Unger added 12 as Muhlenberg became only the second team this season to score as many as 60 points against the Shorewomen (8-10, 5-8), who came into the game ranked eighth in Division III in field-goal percentage defense.
Both teams made the same number of field goals, but 13 of Muhlenberg's 20 came from three-point range. The 13 threes matched the most in a game for the Mules in 12 years. Muhlenberg made only four two-pointers in the first three quarters, scoring all 15 of their third-quarter points from behind the arc.
The Mules trailed 23-22 with less than two minutes to play in the first half before back-to-back threes by sophomore
Avery McNulty and Unger put them ahead to stay.
Down by five at halftime, Washington closed to within one at 31-30 early in the third quarter before a three by Connolly
(pictured above) gave Muhlenberg some breathing room. Saxton's three-pointer in the closing seconds of the third quarter gave the Mules their first double-digit lead, at 46-36.
The Shorewomen were within five, at 52-47, midway through the final period and looked to get possession when a rare miss by Connolly failed to hit the rim. But junior
Megan Winters hustled to save the ball from going out of bounds under the basket and flung the ball back to Saxton, who banked in a three as the shot clock buzzer sounded for the dagger.
Senior
Caroline Horst played another fine all-around game for the Mules, finishing with 4 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocked shots. McNulty, just about 24 hours after
winning the high jump at the Muhlenberg Indoor Invitational, recorded 6 points and a block.
