Two Wrestlers Earn All-America

The Muhlenberg wrestling team came away with four dramatic wins and two All-Americans on the first day of the NCAA Division III Championships.

Junior Joey Lamparelli (125) and sophomore Anson Dewar (174) both advanced to the consolation semifinals to become the Mules' first All-Americans since 2009. It's the first time in program history that Muhlenberg has crowned two All-Americans in the same season.

The third Mule NCAA qualifier, sophomore Brandon Bowles, dropped both of his bouts at 157 to finish his season with a record of 31-5.

Lamparelli began his NCAA journey with a tough assignment, losing a 10-2 major decision to a Millikin wrestler who is ranked second in Division III by both the NWCA and D3wrestle.com.

Lamparelli's first consolation bout, against a Delaware Valley opponent, was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, with each competitor scoring only an escape. Lamparelli finally recorded a takedown midway through the first overtime period for his first career NCAA victory.

Needing one win to secure All-America status, Lamparelli was taken down just 10 seconds into his next bout. Another takedown put him in a 4-1 hole, but Lamparelli equaled the bout with a takedown of his own by the end of the first period, then pinned his opponent halfway through the second period.

The pin gave Lamparelli a season record of 30-7 and made him only the third Muhlenberg wrestler with back-to-back 30-win seasons.

Dewar started off on a different note, needing just 39 seconds to pin his first opponent, a Waynesburg wrestler who was seeded eighth in the tournament and is ranked ninth in Division III at 174. It was only the second pin by a Mule wrestler at nationals since 1994.

Dewar moved to the consolation bracket after dropping a 6-0 decision to the 11th-ranked 174-pounder in Division III in the quarterfinals.

In his first consolation bout, Dewar took his opponent from Wesleyan down with less than a minute left in the first period for the first points. He chose top for the second period and eventually turned his opponent and pinned him.

Dewar, now 32-3 on the season, is the second Muhlenberg wrestler to record two pins at the NCAA Championships.
