Wrestling Sends Three to Nationals

For the second time in the last three seasons, Muhlenberg will be sending three wrestlers to the NCAA Division III Championships.

Two of the Mule qualifiers, junior Joey Lamparelli (125) and sophomore Brandon Bowles (157) earned return trips to nationals, which are scheduled for March 10-11 in Roanoke, Virginia. They will be joined this year by sophomore 174-pounder Anson Dewar.

After winning his quarterfinal bout with a dramatic last-second pin, Lamparelli captured his semifinal with relative ease, parlaying a takedown and four-point near-fall in the first period into an 8-0 major decision for his 60th career win.

In the final, Lamparelli locked up with the Ursinus wrestler who he defeated in sudden victory in the Centennial Conference championship bout. This one nearly went to overtime too – Lamparelli was reversed in the final 15 seconds and was on the verge of escaping when time ran out. He had to settle for a 4-3 loss and the regional runner-up spot for the second straight year.

Bowles rebounded after a 5-3 loss in the semifinals to win the regional consolation final for the second year in a row. In the consolation semifinal, he recorded one takedown in each of the three periods en route to setting a school record with his 10th major decision of the season. The 9-1 final his 30th win of the season.

The consolation final matched two nationally ranked opponents (Bowles eighth, his Elizabethtown opponent 11th) and turned into a strange contest that featured three stoppages for video review. Bowles had two takedowns taken away by review but also won one on review, winning the bout 5-3.

In another Centennial final rematch, Dewar advanced to the regional championship with a 5-3 decision against a Johns Hopkins opponent who he has defeated three times this season. Starting on the bottom in the second period, he scored a reversal, then landed a takedown with 6 seconds left in the period for all the points he would need.

Dewar's opponent in the final is a multiple-time national qualifier who is ranked sixth in Division III. The Oswego wrestler recorded a takedown in the second period and held a 3-2 lead until the final seconds, when he took Dewar down again to finish off a 5-2 decision. It was the first loss for Dewar against a Division III opponent this season.

In Bowles (31-3) and Dewar (30-2), the Mules have two wrestlers with at least 30 wins in a season for only the third time in program history, and it's the first time they have two sophomores with 30 wins in the same season.
