Wrestling Crowns Three Champions

The Muhlenberg wrestling team crowned three first-time champions at the Centennial Conference Championships.

Junior Joey Lamparelli (125) and sophomores Brandon Bowles (157) and Anson Dewar (174) – pictured above, left to right – all won their brackets to lead the Mules to a fourth-place finish.

Two other Muhlenberg wrestlers placed, with graduate student Angelo Mahaffey coming in third at 197 and junior Christopher Dalmau finishing fourth at 141.

Lamparelli got to celebrate his title twice. His opponent was the defending CC runner-up at 125 who is currently ranked second in the Mideast Region. The two squared off 10 days ago with the Ursinus wrestler squeaking out a 3-2 win.

This bout was similarly close, with each wrestler managing only an escape through the first three periods. Midway through the sudden-victory period, Lamparelli was awarded a takedown for an apparent 3-1 win. But the referees conferred and ruled that the takedown should not have been given, and so the wrestlers returned to the mat tied at 1-1.

Lamparelli ended the bout for real with a legitimate takedown in front of the Muhlenberg bench as the period expired. He became the first Mule to win a conference final in overtime since 2018 and the first to win at the lightest weight class since 1996.

In his semifinal bout, Lamparelli had an 11-1 lead when his opponent was disqualified for earning his fifth stalling call.

Bowles, the top seed at 157, needed just 1:57 to pin his semifinal opponent. He was in command throughout the entire final, recording a takedown in each period en route to an 8-0 major decision.

It was the second tournament title for Bowles, who has a season record of 27-2.

Dewar was the only one of the Mule champions to have to wrestle three bouts, but his first two went quickly. Dewar pinned his first opponent in a minute and flattened his semifinal opponent just as time expired in the first period.

His opponent in the final was the defending CC champion at 174; when the two met a week ago, neither recorded a takedown and Dewar won 2-0. This time each wrestler notched two takedowns, but Dewar added two escapes and a reversal in the closing seconds to put the finishing touches on an 8-4 decision.

Dewar is now 26-1 on the season, and undefeated against Division III opponents.

Mahaffey, competing in the CC Championships for the first time in his career, wrestled four close bouts, going 3-1 with a 3-2 decision in the consolation final.

Dalmau went 2-2, beginning his tournament with an overtime win against a Gettysburg wrestler. The two would meet against in the consolation final, with Gettysburg winning the rematch. Dalmau reached the consolation final by winning a major decision.
