The Muhlenberg men's wrestling team wrapped up a strong weekend of competition with five of its 11 placewinners winning their final bouts at the Messiah Petrofes Invitational.

Senior Joey Lamparelli scored the highest place of any Mule, coming in second at 125, while freshmen CJ Horvath (125) and Andrew Loniewski (141) both won consolation finals to place third.

Lamparelli faced an Averett opponent in the final in a matchup of the wrestlers ranked fourth and fifth in Division III. When the two met at the NCAA Championships in March, Lamparelli suffered a 6-1 loss. The rematch was a tight, tense bout for the full 10 minutes, with each wrestler scoring only an escape through three periods and sudden victory.

Lamparelli started the tiebreaker in the down position and appeared to escape midway through the 30-second period but was not awarded the point. The Averett wrestler escaped in the closing seconds of the rideout to come away with a 2-1 win.

Horvath completed a 5-1 weekend with a 10-6 decision against a Mount Union opponent in the consolation final. But no one had a more impressive run than Loniewski, who dropped his opening bout to a returning All-American and then won seven straight bouts – all contested, no forfeits – to come in third. Loniewski notched a major decision, two technical falls and two pins in his march through the consolation bracket.

Junior Frank DiEsso recorded a major decision in the seventh-place bout at 133; both of his tournament losses were to the same opponent. Sophomore Ryan Fairchild also finished with a major decision to come in fifth at 184, and senior Deon Savage ended with a pin in the 197-pound seventh-place bout.
