The Muhlenberg men's wrestling team opened the season by coming in third at Alvernia's Tonee Ellis Memorial Tournament.

Of the 17 Mules who competed, all but one won at least one bout, and several freshmen were impressive in their collegiate debuts.

Heading that list was Evan Mendez, who won all five of his bouts, three by fall, to capture the 149-pound bracket. 

The Mules also would have had a champion at 125, but the two finalists, junior Brian McCaw and freshman CJ Horvath, did not wrestle each other. McCaw reached the final with three wins, including a pin and a technical fall, while Horvath recorded a pin and a major decision.

Other placewinners for Muhlenberg included sophomore Ben Krauss, who pinned four opponents en route to placing third at 285, and sophomore Ryan Fairchild, who came in fourth at 184 on the strength of two pins and a technical fall.

At 165, senior Riley McHale and freshman Nick Stump both advanced to the consolation final but did not face each other. Stump reached the consolation final with a pin of a regionally ranked Western New England opponent who beat him earlier in the day.

Senior Ricky Caamano recorded three straight pins, one when trailing 12-9 in the final 15 seconds, in the 133-pound consolation bracket, and sophomore David Rosenfarb (pictured above) won three straight bouts, two on first-period pins, at 141.

Among other newcomers, Andrew Loniewski (141), Alex Greco (149) and Tyson Derenberger (174) all won two bouts. Loniewski needed only nine seconds to pin one of his opponents.
