The Muhlenberg softball team scored three runs in its first and last at-bats to defeat Haverford, 7-4, in the second game of a doubleheader.
In the opening game, the Mules (14-16, 5-5) came back from two runs down twice and nearly a third time but fell 6-5 in eight innings.
Batting as the home team even though the games were at Haverford, Muhlenberg jumped on top with three runs in the bottom of the first. Sophomore
Gillian Zack,
named Centennial Conference player of the week earlier in the day, drove in the first run with the first of her two doubles. A second run came in on a wild pitch, and freshman
Kaya Mahy singled in the third.
It was 4-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth before the Mules added three more runs. Senior
Genna Cicchetti had the big hit of the inning, a two-out, two-run double.
The extra runs proved to be important when the Fords (11-17, 6-4) scored twice in the top of the seventh and got the tying run to the plate. Senior
Cora Bridgers, named CC pitcher of the week earlier in the day, ended the game with her eighth strikeout.Â
In the opening game, Muhlenberg trailed 2-0 until freshman
Kaitlyn Buurman (pictured above) hit her first career home-run, a two-run shot to center, in the fourth.Â
Haverford went ahead 4-2 in the top of the fifth, but senior
Kristin Oberg delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the frame to tie the score again.
The score remained 4-4 through seven innings, and the Mules went to extra innings for the fourth time this season. After the Fords plated two runs in the top of the eighth, the Mules put their first two runners on in the bottom of the inning. Freshman
Ava Calabrese singled in one run, but the game ended with the tying run on third.
