The Muhlenberg women's basketball team broke open a close game in the third quarter and went on to defeat Franklin & Marshall, 63-56, on Senior Day.
Margaux Eripret, honored before the game along with classmates
Tori Dowd,
Amanda Gorski,
Laura Horner and
Tara Szawaluk, scored a game-high 18 points as the Mules (10-12, 6-11) reached double digits in victories for the 29th consecutive season, extending their College record for all sports.
Neither team led by more than five points in the first two-and-a-half quarters. Muhlenberg began its decisive run with a slim 30-29 lead and 4:20 to play in the third quarter.
Coming off a timeout, Szawaluk hit a three that bounced off the flange and in. After a Diplomat miss, Dowd found freshman
Emily Vaughan in transition for a three from the wing.Â
Seconds later, Vaughan stole a pass near midcourt, dribbled in for a good layup and drew a foul. She made the free throw, completing a 9-0 run in less than a minute that extended the Mule lead to 10.
The Diplomats (9-14, 7-11) made a late push and cut the margin to four with 1:17 left in the fourth quarter, but Szawaluk and Vaughan combined to go 8-for-10 from the foul line down the stretch to seal the win.
Vaughan finished with 11 points, all in the second half. Szawaluk and Gorski scored 8 points apiece, while Dowd had 4 assists without a turnover and recorded a pair of steals.
