10 Advance to Second Day of Petrofes

The Muhlenberg wrestling team enjoyed a successful opening day of the Messiah Petrofes Invitational.

Of the 27 Mules who competed, 25 won at least one bout and 17 won at least two bouts. Of those 17, 10 advanced to the second day of the tournament by earning places in the top eight.

Alive in the championship semifinals were junior Joey Lamparelli (125), sophomores Brandon Bowles (157), Nico Berlingeri (165) and Anson Dewar (174) and freshman Ryan Fairchild (184).

Sophomore Brian McCaw (125), junior Ricky Caamano (133), junior Riley McHale (157), senior Ronnie Grevera (165) and freshman Hayk Grigorian (197) advanced to the consolation semifinals.

Bowles won three decisions, allowing only one point in the three bouts, and the other four Mules who went undefeated on the first day won all their bouts with bonus points. Lamparelli recorded a major decision and a technical fall, Berlingeri a pin and two techs, Dewar a pin and a major decision, and Fairchild two pins in a total of 1:02.

McHale had the most impressive Muhlenberg win of the day, coming from behind in the first period to pin a two-time All-American from Messiah who is ranked seventh in Division III by d3wrestle.com.

Among Mules who didn't place, freshman Trey Miletics (157) won three bouts, on a technical fall and two pins, and senior Jeorcy Peña (141), freshman Billy Wilson (141), sophomores Shane Trattner (165) and Jack Patti (184), junior Deon Savage (184) and freshman Ben Krauss (285) all won two.

Sophomore Mike LaRosa had a memorable win in his first consolation bout at 174. Trailing 11-8 late and with a large deficit in riding time, LaRosa (pictured above) took his opponent down to his back for a two-point near-fall in the closing seconds of the third period, sending the bout to overtime tied at 12-12. LaRosa then recorded a takedown in the first minute of OT for a 14-12 sudden victory.
