Football Edged by Susquehanna

The Muhlenberg football team fell at home to undefeated Susquehanna, 28-24, in a thrilling game that featured five lead changes.

With the win, the River Hawks (9-0, 8-0), who are ranked 13th in Division III by the American Football Coaches Association, clinched a share of their first Centennial Conference championship as well as the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in their last season in the CC. The Mules (5-4, 5-3) suffered their third loss of the season by a touchdown or less.

The six games among the top four teams in the CC - Susquehanna, Johns Hopkins, Ursinus and Muhlenberg - were decided by a total of 32 points.

Muhlenberg executed its two-minute offense to perfection at the end of the first half, moving 73 yards in four plays in only 38 seconds to take a 9-7 lead on a 34-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Joe Repetti to junior Timothy Buda.

Susquehanna regained the lead on its first possession of the second half, but the Mules took it right back on their next drive. Senior Ethan Brader scored the touchdown on a 19-yard run, then caught a two-point conversion from Repetti to make it 17-14.

On the second play after the kickoff, senior John Lohrer (pictured above) outwrestled a River Hawk receiver for his fourth interception of the season. Seven plays later, Repetti ran in from 3 yards out to give Muhlenberg a 24-14 lead.

The Mule offense gained only one first down the rest of the game, however, and Susquehanna turned to its running game to score two fourth-quarter touchdowns. Muhlenberg started its last possession at the 25 with 1:50 left but could not gain a first down.

Repetti finished 14-of-27 for 219 yards to go over 2,000 yards for the season. He also led the Mules with 61 rushing yards, recording a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown in the same game for the fifth time this season.

Senior Michael Feaster caught four passes for 95 yards, including a 45-yarder on Muhlenberg's first play from scrimmage to set up a field goal.

Senior Kyle Dormer and junior Anthony Sargenti led the defense with 7 tackles apiece.
