The Muhlenberg wrestling team opened its 2022-23 season with 10 placewinners at the Alvernia Invitational.

Sophomore Brandon Bowles, a 2022 national qualifier, topped the list by capturing the 157-pound title. Bowles, ranked second in the Mideast Region at 149, breezed through his first three matches on a first-minute pin, a technical fall and a 7-0 decision to set up a showdown with the third-ranked 157-pounder in the Southeast Region. The final was worthy of two ranked wrestlers, with Bowles scoring a takedown in sudden victory for a 3-1 win.

Third place - sophomore Brian McCaw (125), sophomore Fletcher Goodman (184)
Fourth place - senior Jeorcy Peña (141), Trey Miletics (157), junior Riley McHale (165)

Lamparelli also had a dramatic final, falling in a tiebreaker to an Alvernia wrestler ranked fifth in the region. He advanced to the final on a major decision, pin and decision.

Berlingeri, competing for the first time as a Mule, was dominant before running into the third-ranked wrestler in Division III. In his first three bouts, Berlingeri recorded two technical falls and a pin in a minute.

Fairchild and Miletics also were impressive in their Muhlenberg debuts. Fairchild's lone loss came to a nationally ranked opponent, while Miletics lost only to Bowles before the consolation final.

Although they did not place, other first-time Mules to win bouts were freshman Billy Wilson (2-2 at 141), Logan Hurwitt (3-1 at 157), Hayk Grigorian (2-2 at 197) and Ben Krauss (3-2 with three first-period pins) and sophomore Mike LaRosa (1-2 at 174).

Peña and McHale enjoyed good runs through the consolation bracket, with Peña (pictured above) winning three straight bouts before dropping a close 8-6 decision to earn a tournament place for the first time in his career. McHale scored four straight wins, including a first-period pin and two technical falls.
