Muhlenberg senior
Matthew D'Ambrosia was named Division III pitcher of the week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
D'Ambrosia, who also was named
Centennial Conference pitcher of the week and landed on the
D3baseball.com Team of the Week, set a school record and tied the CC mark by striking out 21 batters while pitching a three-hit shutout in the Mules' 5-0 win against Lesley. He broke the previous school mark of 17, set 55 years ago, and set the CC record for whiffs by a right-hander in a game.
D'Ambrosia allowed only five baserunners and struck out the side in the third, sixth, eighth and ninth innings, tying another school record with six consecutive strikeouts. He also became Muhlenberg's all-time strikeout leader when he fanned his seventh batter in the third inning and now has 218 career strikeouts.
The 21 strikeouts were the most by a Division III pitcher since 2011 and one short of the Division III record. Only one other NCAA pitcher (all three divisions) has struck out 21 batter in a game since 2012.
The national award is the second for D'Ambrosia, who was previously honored after
striking out 15 in a shutout of Dickinson in 2018.
