For the second straight week, senior
Matthew D'Ambrosia of the Muhlenberg baseball team was named Centennial Conference pitcher of the week.
D'Ambrosia set a school record and tied the CC mark by striking out 21 batters while pitching a three-hit shutout in the Mules' 5-0 win against Lesley. He broke the previous school mark of 17, set 55 years ago, and set the CC record for whiffs by a right-hander in a game.
D'Ambrosia allowed only five baserunners and struck out the side in the third, sixth, eighth and ninth, tying another school record with six consecutive Ks. He also became Muhlenberg's all-time strikeout leader when he fanned his seventh batter in the third inning, finishing the game with a career total of 218.
For the season, D'Ambrosia is 2-0 with a 0.95 ERA in three starts. He has allowed only nine hits and struck out 39 in 19 innings, holding opponents to a .134 batting average.Â
Among pitchers who have thrown at least 15 innings, D'Ambrosia leads Division III with his average of 18.47 strikeouts per nine innings. Out of all active Division III pitchers, he ranks sixth with his 218 whiffs and 17th in strikeouts per nine innings (11.00).
