Behind three champions, the Muhlenberg wrestling team came in second at the Centennial Conference Championships.
The Mules finished with 69.5 points, just six behind first-place Washington and Lee. The second-place finish was their best in 13 years, and they improved their team score by 11.5 points from last year.
Senior
Austin Sherman (149), sophomore
Luca Colestock (197) and senior
Scott Schaeffer (285) all won their first conference titles. Senior
Brian Jamison placed second at 174, and seniors
Dylan Schwartz (165) and
Jimmy Fratantoni (184) won consolation finals to come in third.
Muhlenberg went 5-1 in contested bouts in the championship round to move from fourth place into second in the team standings.
Sherman had the most dramatic championship moment against an Ursinus wrestler who upset the second and third seeds to reach the final. After a scoreless first period, he chose down for the second period but struggled to escape before reversing his opponent to his back with just nine seconds left in the period.
Colestock, ranked sixth in Division III, scored two takedowns in a span of about 12 seconds in the third period to pull away for an 8-3 decision in the final. Colestock also won by decision in his first bout and is now 30-1 on the season.
Schaeffer recorded pins in his first two bouts before squaring off against an Ursinus wrestler who gave him his closest contest of the CC season, a 3-2 decision. The rematch had the same score late in the third period before Schaeffer notched a pair of takedowns to win, 7-4.
Jamison acquitted himself well against the 10th-ranked 174-pounder in Division III, scoring takedowns in each of the first two periods to build a 4-1 lead. His Merchant Marine opponent came back, however, for a 9-4 win.
A late takedown and near-fall gave Fratantoni an 8-1 win in his consolation final against a former NCAA qualifier in a stacked 184-pound field. Fratantoni extended his own school record with his 21st career technical fall in his first consolation bout.
Schwartz also notched a technical fall, in addition to a major decision, in reaching the 90-win mark for his career.
