Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Falls on Late Basket

The Muhlenberg women's basketball rallied from a six-point deficit to take a fourth-quarter lead, but Gettysburg staged its own rally, scoring with 20.8 seconds left to pull out a 71-70 win in a battle of regionally ranked Centennial Conference teams.

With the win, the Bullets (20-2, 16-1) moved into the driver's seat to host the CC semifinals and final in two weeks. They have a two-game lead over both the Mules (20-3, 15-3) and Haverford. Muhlenberg can secure a first-round bye by winning either of its final two regular-season games, at home against Bryn Mawr and McDaniel.

Senior Rachel Plotke scored a career-high 26 points, including 12 in the third quarter when the Mules made their big run. Senior Brandi Vallely finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists, while senior Chelsea Gary also recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Gettysburg led 33-28 at the end of a tightly contested first half and was up by six, 38-32, two minutes into the second half. A three-point play by Vallely (pictured above) at the 3:56 mark gave Muhlenberg its first lead of the half at 46-43.

After scoring 28 points in the first two quarters, the Mules matched that in the third quarter alone, heading into the final 10 minutes with a 56-51 advantage following a steal and layup by junior Sara Dilly.

Two threes by Plotke and a steal/layup by Vallely fueled an 8-2 run at the start of the fourth that extended the Mule lead to double digits. The Bullets hit threes on their next two possessions, however, to tighten the game back up.

Gary's layup with 2:23 left gave Muhlenberg a 70-65 lead, but the Bullets ran off the final six points to complete their season sweep of the Mules.

Vallely's six assists gave her 650 for her career, moving her into a tie for 15th place in Division III history. Plotke's six threes moved her into fifth place on the all-time CC list with 229; she also extended her streak of consecutive games making a three to 30 - the second such streak in her career.

The Mules turned the ball over only three times and scored 70 points against a Bullet squad that came in giving up an average of only 52.6 per game.
