Women's Lacrosse Opens League Play with Shutout

The Muhlenberg women's lacrosse team extended its winning streak to four games with a 19-0 Centennial Conference-opening shutout of Bryn Mawr.

The shutout was the second for the Mules (4-1, 1-0) this season; 20 days ago, they blanked Emmanuel 16-0. It's the second time that Muhlenberg has kept two opponents off the scoreboard in the same season. Of the five shutouts in program history, one came in 2005, two in 2013 and now two in 2017.

Through games of Thursday, only one team in Division III (Mount Ida) had more than one shutout this season.

The margin of victory was the biggest for the Mules in a shutout, topping their 18-0 win against Chestnut Hill in 2005. And Muhlenberg shut out the Owls not only on the scoreboard, but also on the stat sheet: For the first time in team history, the Mules did not allow a shot. Bryn Mawr (1-5, 0-1) had 19 possessions and turned the ball over on each one, settling the ball on offense only once in the entire game.

Freshman Gabriella Crivelli, who also scored two goals, led the defense with three caused turnovers and four ground balls. Of the three Muhlenberg goalies who combined on the shutout, only two got to touch the ball - and one was at the other end of the field. Starting goalie Sara Allison played the first half and dressed as a field player late in the game, taking a shot in the closing seconds. Freshman Jordan Segrave (who relieved senior Alex Grossman midway through the second half) came out of the goal to intercept a pass on one of the Owls' rare forays into their offensive zone.

Junior Jordy Bonvini led 13 Mules who found the back of the net with three goals and two assists. She also recorded nine draw controls in less than a half of action. Senior Kelsey Nagle finished with five assists to move into 14th place on the all-time CC list with 105 for her career.

In addition to Crivelli, senior Stephanie D'Ascoli and sophomore Amanda Tullo (pictured above) scored a pair of goals. So did junior Eliza Clark on her 21st birthday.

Freshmen Madeline Mullett, Kate O'Connell, Julia Lombardo and Catherine Sappé all netted their first career goals.

With the opening draw at noon, the Mules had a 2-0 lead before the chimes in the Haas bell tower had stopped ringing. Muhlenberg led 7-0 less than 10 minutes into the game and scored 15 goals in the first half - one short of the school record.

Playing the second in a stretch of three games in four days, Muhlenberg rested most of its starters in the second half, giving the younger team members a chance to get on the field.
