Football Selected for ECAC Bowl Game

After finishing the regular season with a 7-3 record, the Muhlenberg football team was selected to play in the Asa S. Bushnell Bowl, one of four games in the third ECAC Division III Football Fest.

The Mules will play Carnegie Mellon on Saturday, November 18, at 11:00 at Delaware Stadium in Newark, Del.

The postseason berth is the 14th in the last 18 years for Muhlenberg, including seven in the NCAA Tournament, two in the Centennial/MAC Bowl Series and now five in ECAC bowl games.

Despite a challenging season marked by the passing of head coach Mike Donnelly on October 4, the Mules recorded their eighth consecutive year of at least seven wins, capped by a 29-14 defeat of rival Moravian in the Sodexo Trophy game. Muhlenberg's three losses were by a total of 13 points to three teams that will also be playing in the postseason, one in the NCAA Tournament and two in the Centennial/MAC Bowl Series.

The Muhlenberg defense ranks 19th in Division III against the run, allowing only 82.6 yards per game, and is on pace to allow fewer than 20 points per game (18.2) for the 18 consecutive year. The Mules gave up more than two touchdowns in only two of their nine CC games.

The offense has overcome inexperience at quarterback and the loss of its top running back to average 32.1 points per game. Muhlenberg ranks in the top 30 in Division III in both time of possession and first downs and is averaging 190.6 rushing yards per game despite starting four different players at running back.

Carnegie Mellon also finished the regular season with a 7-3 record, with two of its losses coming by a touchdown to teams in the NCAA Tournament (Case Western Reserve and Washington & Jefferson). The Tartans, who are making their third straight ECAC bowl game appearance, average 32.7 points per game and are 24th in Division III in pass efficiency defense.

The Mules have played Carnegie Mellon three times previously, winning in 1941 and losing in 1996 and 1997.

With a victory on Saturday, the Mules' 20 seniors would tie last year's class for the most wins over a four-year period (34) in program history.

Muhlenberg last played at Delaware Stadium in 1953 – the year after it opened – falling 18-6 to the University of Delaware. The Mules played postseason games in the state of Delaware in 2007 and 2010, when they traveled to Wesley for NCAA Tournament contests.
