Volleyball Wins Epic in Five Sets

For the second time in four days, the Muhlenberg volleyball team got down but not out.

After coming from behind several times in a four-set win against Dickinson on Wednesday, the Mules outdid themselves at Washington College, rebounding again from a loss in the first set and recording big comebacks in the second and fifth sets to pull out a 21-25, 31-29, 21-25, 25-20, 21-19 win.

In the fifth and decisive set, the Mules fell behind 14-10 and saved four match points to tie. They staved off another match point down 15-14, then served four times themselves with a chance to win before the epic match finally ended on a Washington attack error.

Sophomore Kelly Tornetta and freshmen Maggie Enestvedt set career highs with 20 kills apiece. Sophomore Shannon Hubert had 47 assists to go along with a career-high 25 digs, while senior Elizabeth Garrison also established a career high in digs (33) to go along with 8 assists and 4 aces.

After dropping the first set, Muhlenberg (11-4, 3-1) looked to be in danger of falling into an 0-2 hole when the Shorewomen (6-7, 1-3) took a 24-22 lead in the second set. A kill from Tornetta and a Washington attack error tied the score, and the teams went back and forth, each missing on several chances to serve out the match, before a service ace by freshman Tara Register ended the 31-29 marathon.

The Shorewomen took the third set and scored the first three points of the fourth, but the Mules recovered and pulled away late, sending the match to a fifth set on one of seven kills by sophomore Erica Schultz.

Washington quickly gained the upper hand in the final set, opening up a 4-1 lead. The Mules came back to tie at 5-5 and 8-8 but had their backs against the wall after the Shorewomen extended their 11-10 lead with three straight points. Two Washington attack errors, followed by two kills by Tornetta, brought the set to a tie. Another kill by Tornetta knotted the set again at 15-15. At 19-19, Register put down a kill off a set from Hubert to set the stage for the final point.

Since volleyball went to its current format of rally scoring with 15 points winning the fifth set, Muhlenberg never played a longer fifth set. The longest previous one came on the same court two years ago, when the Mules outlasted Washington 18-16 in the fifth.
