The Muhlenberg volleyball team came from behind multiple times to defeat Dickinson, 3-1, in a Centennial Conference home match.
Freshman
Maggie Enestvedt recorded a career-high 19 kills to pace the attack, while sophomore
Erica Schultz also set a career best with 13 kills. Sophomore
Shannon Hubert finished with 40 assists, 17 digs and 7 kills, and senior
Elizabeth Garrison had 25 digs.
Freshman
Laura Boll gave the Mules (10-4, 2-1) a big lift off the bench, contributing a career-high 10 digs.
A Red Devil squad coached by former Muhlenberg assistant Andrew Pile captured the first set, 25-18, and jumped out to a 20-15 lead in the second. After a timeout, the Mules scored the next six points to take a 21-20 lead, and the teams traded points throughout the rest of the tense set. Dickinson (7-8, 1-2) served for the set twice, but kills by Schultz and Enestvedt kept Muhlenberg from falling into a 2-0 hole.
With the set tied at 26, a kill by Enestvedt ended a long rally that featured scrappy play from both teams. The end of the thrilling set was somewhat anticlimactic, as the Red Devils could not get the ball back over the net after a serve by Garrison.
Dickinson continued to push Muhlenberg in the third set, opening up a 15-12 lead. Again the Mules came back, with back-to-back aces by Enestvedt fueling an 8-0 run. A powerful kill by Schultz gave Muhlenberg a 23-17 lead en route to closing out the set at 25-17.Â
The fourth set was free of dramatics, as the Mules built an early lead and clinched the match with a 25-13 win.
Defense was a key to the win: After the Red Devils hit .367 in the opening set, the Mules held them to .086 hitting over the final three sets. Freshman
Tara Register (13 digs) combined with Garrison, Hubert, Boll and Enestvedt (10) to give the team five players with double figures in digs.
The victory gave Muhlenberg double digits in wins for the 25th time in the last 26 years.
