The Muhlenberg volleyball team kicked off the 2026-27 athletics year with a thrilling 27-25 overtime win in set one, but then fell in straight sets to the visiting Susquehanna River Hawks by a score of 3-1 Tuesday evening.
The Mules were hot from the first serve, going up 5-1 on a trio of kills and a service ace to begin the set. They led by as much as six in the early going, nabbing that advantage on an
Andrea Romero-Agosto putaway to make the score 12-6. Susquehanna battled back, however, knotting the bout up at 18 before sending the game to overtime later in the set. With the score tied at 25, a River Hawk error followed by a kill by Muhlenberg's freshman hitter
Lizzie Steinkamp (pictured) secured the victory for the hosts.
Steinkamp was effective throughout her debut set and match, putting up five kills in the first and finishing the match with a team-best 12. The duo of junior
Abigail Oswari and sophomore Romero-Agosto were effective throughout as well, as each recorded 11 kills on hitting percentages of .25 and .31, respectively. Romero-Agosto, Oswari, Steinkamp, and
Kelliann Keogh each made plays and shined at different points throughout the evening.
Steinkamp and Romero-Agosto tied for the team lead in blocks with 1.5, while senior
Jenny Ryan and sophomore
Bailey Crampton each finished with 19 assists apiece to top the Mules. Crampton, who played sparingly as a rookie last season, played in all four sets and put the ball on the tee for her teammates all night. Ryan was one of three Mules to reach double figures in digs with 10, joining Oswari (10) and
Chloe Gaglione (13).
